Predicting the future with The Web Bot Project [Infographic]

Have you ever heard of the Web Bot Project? Created in 1997, it is an application that can, by tracking trending keywords and net chatter, predict future events. Bold and far fetched claim, don’t you think? But apparently it works. It has claimed to have predicted past events such as the September 11 attacks, the BP oil spill and hurricane Katrina, and many more. It has also predicted future events such as the 2012 Phenomenon and a “data gap” in late 2012 running through May 2013 brought about by devastating solar activity.

Whether you believe in these kinds of predictions or not, the fact remains, it is all very a interesting and darn good read. The infographic below explains everything you need to know about The Web Bot Project and highlights some of its big predictions from the past and looks towards some of its scary future predictions.

      And I wonder two things:

      1. What is the bot’s percentage of accuracy?
      2. Did it predict any benevolent events?

Something that makes you go hmmm….

There are also a lot of conspiracy theorists online; what is regulating the precedence of their talk that it grabs and from the scientifically accurate sources? The future prediction for this year COULD happen… while it says the one next year is more of a fact.

A catastrophic event will occur within the next 60-90 days, and then came 9/11? Sorry, but the bot have to be more specific. in that range there where floods in the 3rd world, ethnic killings by the thousands, plane that crashed, a earthquake in San Salvador that killed thousands, a earthquake kills 50 000 people in India and so on…

I can see how synthesizing net chatter and based on what people say, could lead to a prediction of what said people or just people may do… but to think that “keywords and net chatter” can predict a non-human event, like Katrina or anything similar is off-base and hurts the possible sociological and psychological data that could actually be helpful.

Even though people can cause destruction through their actions, when nature happens, it just happens.
