At the recently held World Wide Developers’ Conference (WWDC), Apple unveiled a new version of its popular mobile operating system, the iOS 6. Just in case you’re getting curious already, iOS 6 will be available as a free update for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users around mid-September this year. If you are an iOS developer you can download the iOS 6 SDK now.
Talking about features, iOS 6 comes with a brand new Maps app (cartography designed by Apple itself). Yes, you guessed it right – good bye to Google Maps. Siri has been enhanced further, including new languages, restaurant recommendations, movie listings, and sports’ scores.
Apart from that, there have been other touch-ups to social networking features, such as better Facebook integration for Contacts and Calendar, and so on.
However, two much-needed (and awaited) improvements are those pertaining to Safari and Email, respectively. In Safari, you can now sync open tabs between desktop and mobile via iCloud (you will need OSX Mountain Lion on your desktop, though). Innovative feature? Definitely not! Many browsers have been offering this for ages.
In the Email app, you can now designate VIP email senders. So if you wish to prioritize your boss’ emails over those awesome-deals-at-eBay, you can do so easily.
iOS 6 not good enough for you? Well, Apple has also announced its ninth generation OS X “Mountain Lion“, which should be available next month.
And if that wasn’t sufficient to make you happy, new models of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air have also been announced. The new generation of devices will come with higher resolution, retina display and up to 60% faster graphics. With the exception of the entry level model(s), Apple has slashed almost $100 on the price tag of all Air models.
