Apple Unveils the iPhone 5 — “The World’s Slimmest Smartphone”

Apple unveiled the iPhone 5 at its media launch event in San Francisco yesterday (and the internet is already comparing and debating its pros and cons).

Sounds great? Well, I know you can’t wait to jump into the details about the device — to begin with, the new iPhone is taller, leaner, shinier and lighter — however, not at all costlier! Yes, you read that right; Apple iPhone 5 comes with the same price tag as that of its predecessor.

iPhone 5

In terms of figures and numbers, iPhone 5 is 7.66 mm in thickness (almost 18% thinner than its predecessor iPhone 4S) and weighs 112 grams (again, almost 20% lighter than iPhone 4S). Under the hood, there is a quad-core Cortex A6 processor and an 8MP rear camera. Add to it a pixel density of 326, retina display and a 1136×640 resolution with an aspect ration of 16:9, and you can hear the Apple aficionados skipping a heart beat already!

Previous versions of the iPhone have received a significant amount of heat from the masses owing to unsatisfactory battery performances. IPhone 5 tries to make amends — the battery promises 225 hours of standby time, 8 hours of 3G talktime, 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing, 8 hours of 3G and 4G LTE browsing, 10 hours of video playback and 40 hours of music playback.

iPhone 5

Mind-numbing digits apart, as a loyal Android user, the biggest grievance I’ve had is the eye-candy element that Apple iPhone brings to the table (and Android smartphones generally do not, with the possible exception of Sony’s Xperia line-up). iPhone does not let me rest either — the iOS 6-powered “world’s slimmest smartphone” is built entirely of glass and aluminium.

Currently, Samsung leads the smartphone market with a little over 32% of the market share, followed by Apple at 17%. Will the iPhone 5 reset the statistics and help Apple inch closer to Samsung? What do you think? Do share your thoughts with us in the comments!

They lied, Motorola Droid Razr is the slimmest phone.

the thinnest part of the phone, like the ascend claims, the thiinnest part.

No, I’m sorry but on what planet does this article fit into this blog? I know a lot of designers love their Apple products but last I looked this is just an advert and not anything of use.

Very disappointed to see this here.

    • Shaun Forsyth

      I agree

I am a little bit disappointed that you feel this short piece is an advert. i can assure it is not. All we wanted to do was make our readers aware that Apple released a new version of the iPhone. Simple as that.

Just as we did when Apple released Mountain Lion, just as we did when Adobe released CS6, or when WordPress released its last major update and when RIM unveiled their Blackberry 10 tools for developers. The point I am making is all of these short news items we publish are all directly or indirectly relevant to our readership of designers and developers.

In the future, we will publish a short news item when Windows 8 is released or when jQuery has a major release, or when Linux finally releases a mobile OS… If we feel it is important to our readers we will publish.

As it happens I am an Android user. And to be honest if I was a reader of this blog I wouldn’t have read this post. Doesn’t really interest me. But I am sure we have plenty of readers who are Apple fans that did have an interest in it. That makes it relevant.

      Paul.

Paul, I am an iphone user and android user, however If you are an apple fan boy you would have already known about this release date and this wouldn’t be your source for the information.

This is a web/design feed, Some of the tools you mention above are related to the industry and you should announce, for example if a new version of jQuery was released and if you didn’t have an article, I would feel let down.

I don’t want this to become an apple vs google war on phone operating systems, I just want to keep this good blog on topic.

I’m sorry, your disappointed? If this article has no relevance/interest why did you even click on it in the first place? Just to write a comment like this I bet. If this article did genuinely interest you then have a read, maybe leave a positive comment but to just leave a pointless one like this is well, rather pointless. Please let me and everyone else know what harm this has caused to you.

I rarely read/leave comments on blogs but happened to scroll down and have a look at what people we’re saying about the iPhone 5. All I got out of it was feeling slightly annoyed for the author after reading yours.

i have to say I agree with Craig, since when did this blog post advertisement articles? Disappointed.

Apple will probably never overtake Android for the simple reason that most of the world cannot afford Apple.

    • jaystrab

You realize Apple could buy every company that makes Android phones, right?

      • Evert

I highly doubt your claim since the number of companies that make androids is huge and contains several big companies. But even if Apple could get billions to allocate for such an action, it can never stop new companies producing Androids which they then have to buy as well; so the whole process would be a bottomless pit (and Apple would quickly become bankrupt) and therefor very unlikely.

You forgot to mention more expensive, lower resolution, less battery life, smaller screen and no memory card slot compared to the Samsung Galaxy S3

  • http://beyn.org/ Barış Ünver

Huawei Ascend P1s wins by 6.7 milimeters. And frankly, iPhone5′s specs are STILL worse than Samsung Galaxy S III. Sorry iPhone, you lose again.

  • Mike

whatever, simply awesome one, It is not worth switching from 4s to 5 but definitely worth switching from an android phone to an iphone. Whether you hate or love apple, you can’t but agree to their habit of setting the industry trends.

  • jaystrab

Wow all these comments about Galaxy S3. It has more resolution because the thing is freakin huge. It doesn’t fit in anyone’s hand comfortably.
