    Brilliant read.

I’ve just started my own web design business so this is exactly the type of article I like to read.

Productivity illusion is where I’ve been falling recently. I need to get my head down and really work on that. I’m struggling on finding a niche industry, I’m stuck in that mind set why not offer to everyone who needs a web site. I know lot’s off people are in this mind set, it’s something I need to develop.

Totally agree! I’ll go out on a limb here and say, we’ve heard this before. By not putting these principles into practice is why we fail. Too busy doing task that yields little financial return (when a ROI is what we strive for and partly why we invest so heavily in what we do). Thanks for sharing your perspective. Not just telling of an issue we all face as business owners but also providing a practical and clear path toward improving the bottom line.

Another important thing you should do is create a solid system. Every time you perform a task for a client, take note of these specific steps that must be taken. When you find something that helped speed up the process or enhance your service, add it into your system. Just a simple Excel or Word doc works fine. The key here is to develop a strong system of work. All major successful businesses have a strong system behind them that they run every client through to keep things working well for good service and maximum profits. This also becomes a good guide for you yourself and can lessen your mental burden. If your system is good, clients will be happy, return and word spreads to other clients.

I have come across both freelancers and IT departments of major organisations working in this way. Point 1 – Thinking About What You Want Rather Than Them I would say is the most common complaint I seem to come across

    Great article, thank you.
Another thing which I was very guilty of in the early days of freelancing was doing too much for a client!
i.e. I was so eager to please, I would produce far too many ideas for them to choose from, (way above what was included in the the agreed payment for job) then bowed to every single tweak and whim they requested-resulting again in another kind of ‘productivity illusion’ in a way.

Maybe a subject for another article!
