Grid based layout designs can be very useful for building structured, usable and content rich (not limited to) websites. Grid design certainly has some major benefits for developers (its really easy to to plan where things should go), but its real power lies in what it can do for your readers and users. With a structured grid layout, an everyday user visiting your site can quickly understand and locate the content they want making it very obvious for users to navigate.

In this article we have 30 WordPress themes have been developed with a grid framework. All of the themes have been built using popular CSS Grid Frameworks such as the 960.gs, Blueprint, YUI2 and The Golden Grid. We have also included a couple of WordPress grid frameworks at the bottom of the post which you may find useful.

Apart from Folio, i dislike most of these, not because there bad. I just think most users would find them confusing in a practical sense.

Depends on target audience I agree, but as a developer, by nature am web literate to a high degree, I find myself struggling to follow the flow of the pages and am unsure where i’m meant to be looking.

Very nice wrapup. May I mention that my PRiNZ Pro Themes are also build on the 960 Grid system.

Most of these are horrible examples of grid based websites, they aren’t all confusing and drab.

Oh boy. I can only vouch for the 960 bc (blank theme), and even then, I would recommend that you start from scratch in an effort to learn both the grid system and WP. Then you’ll have your own starting point, and a great foundation in your mind to work from.

If you do want to use a grid-based theme, the only one I feel comfortable recommending would be Ashford (free), and Ashford Pro (currently $49). Check it out for yourself at http://ashford.turtleinteractive.com to see what it’s got.

I have no affiliation to this, although I have bought Ashford Pro and spent some time talking with Tim Bednar, the developer.

    That’s my $0.02
