    You’re wrong :P.

Any program can be improved with extenions, MS Paint can be great with 75. But the core program is still not too good. It’s true that it’s been underrated a lot, but since it’s not really a business standard nobody really cares that much.

Also I don’t see why Adobe keeps updating Fireworks, since their other programs can do the same tricks.

  • http://webtoolkit4.me Gerasimos

If someone bothers to download all this stuff, at the end of the day they will go to the local software shop and pick a photoshop copy even if it’s so expensive hehe, just kidding.

Amazing list. Never thought there will be so many extensions.

  • http://www.puredezigner.com PureDezigner

Great list, I just wish I could download them all at once. Thanks!

Thanks for taking the time to put this list together. That fact that Fireworks is so much “cheaper” that Photoshop will make this resource useful to many.

Just a quick note to let you know that the link to richiebee.ca is incorrectly pointing to johndunning.com

Other than that, really useful list of extensions :) I’m a longtime Fireworks user and I too prefer it to Photoshop.

  • mrchowwow

Amen. I have used Fireworks for years for photo touchups, print graphics, vector illustrations, etc. It is the unsung powerhouse that is much simpler that PS and very strong. Great, under rated software. Love it.

  • http://www.chimbles.com Chimbles

This is awesome! Kudos for compiling the list… go Fireworks!

  • ylon

I’m so happy to see this! I’ve been explaining to associates for years that Fireworks, for the most part, is so much more useful than Photoshop. Others who are very experienced with both Photoshop AND Fireworks have always concurred as we know when to use each.

I’ve been using Photoshop since 2.5.1 and certainly understand its depth, but Fireworks obliterates Photoshop and Illustrator for SO many tasks that it makes me really laugh when I see people dedicating so much time to doing the same things that could be done in a fraction of the time in Fireworks. Thanks so much for sharing!

And yes, I’ve known about 90% of these plugins and use them myself, so bravo for compiling the list!

By the way, I’d love to see Adobe get *smart* and integrate Photshop and Illustrator INTO Fireworks or at least have all three apps living under one unified roof with a selectable user interface and/or command set so that you could flip between them if you’re more familiar with one or the other and then also we’d have the very powerful bitmap editing of Photoshop and the very powerful vector illustrating of Illustrator merged at the perfect intersection of Fireworks.

You may want to fix the “Smaller Extensons” links… also, the Wikipedia page is not necessarily Adobe’s “Official Adobe Fireworks Page”…

  • http://www.blog.epicerastudio.com Make Design, Not War

Interesting post… It’s funny how posts about Fireworks are usually met with peculiar raises of the eyebrow by most designers. Having been a designer for years and years now, I’ve never really understood the program. I poked at it when it was owned by Macromedia because it felt like “the alternative” to PS, but now that Adobe owns both, I’m sorta at a loss to explain to anyone the reason why they might use Fireworks in a professional setting. In any event – this was a very informative post for anyone interested in digging into the program – thanks for sharing it.

  • Chad

All you Photoshop Fanboys don’t get it.

Photoshop is for print and very complex graphics. Fireworks is for web prototyping and web graphics. Photoshop does not do what Fireworks does and vice versa. Maybe you should try out Fireworks and see for yourself how easy web design can really be.

    yup. totally agree with chad^.

i’ve used both for years. ps for printwork and fw for web prototyping.

there is a MASSIVE difference between the two.

  • http://www.lorenai.com/ Lauren

Fireworks is great, but it’s no Photoshop. There are some similarities, but I think it’s a bit of an apples vs oranges comparison. That said, IMO Fireworks is a much better choice for web graphics.

Will be sure to try out some of these extensions :)

  • http://www.cagintranet.com/ Chris Cagle

    @Chad – Agreed.

Fireworks performs a completely different task than Photoshop. I absolutely love it.

  • http://www.hehetube.com Mike

Great post! I’ve been using Fireworks for a while and it’s great!

  • Cameron

I love Fireworks and use it everyday, BUT it is not Photoshop nor is it supposed to be.

Fireworks is a prototyping and web graphics program, Photoshop is photo touch-up program.

I use Fireworks for creating web site prototypes and slicing images, If the author had really used Photoshop properly he/she would know that Firefoxs does not match Photoshop in features.

  • http://www.line.uk.com Alex

I can’t believe the nay-sayers for Fireworks. I used to use Photoshop religously and would swear by it, but for designing websites, there’s really no competiton for Fireworks. It’s a different tool to Photoshop – and is for completely different things.

It’s powerful for working with boxes, objects and vector-based raster graphics, yet Photoshop is more orientated towards actual photography enhancement and image manipulation (and clearly alot more).

Don’t get me wrong – I use Photoshop for somethings. Image processing, jpg work, re-touching, airbrushing etc etc – but Fireworks is easily my tool of choice for website designs/mocks. No competiton in my opinion.

Kudo to Fireworks! I hope FW CS4 will improve the best! Bring it on!

Fireworks is great for doing fast html mockup pages, but I always go back to Photoshop for heavier graphics and bring them back into Fireworks. I do like Fireworks UI in that I can scale and move everything very easily, but their color picker is the default one Windows comes with, which is pretty bad.

I also used photoshop for many years making sites for Kinko’s, Sovereign Bank and many other.

Fireworks is simply a better program for web work.

I still use phtotshop for rare photo manipulation but I use Fireworks 95% of the time. I feel it’s easy flexibility also help me create more more exciting designs.

While I certainly would not download all these plugins. you did miss two that i things are the best

http://www16.big.or.jp/~nansya/fwmx/textures.html NN_teture Selector is a great texture browser I use constantly for flipping through the hundred of texture packs I use. It’s awesome.

And last a gradient panel that give you fine precise control over your gradients. Once you use it you’ll fal in love and grant is creating a new version with more features. Still I would grab the original until it is ready.

Good luck and dump the old graying PS. Adobe hasn’t had an upgrade worth paying for since layers and live text.

Managing objects is just so much easier in Fireworks. Photoshop is still the standard, but damn if it isn’t a pain in the ass when you’re used to how easy it is to quickly move between layered objects in FW.

I use FW for web design, and in my experience it really beats the c… out of Photoshop in that area.

As I read here, they are different tools. FW is totally web oriented, PS is not.

Fireworks is excellent for web work, especially slicing images. Plus it works on Vista. Not that I like vista I just got shoved that direction. Now fireworks on Linux, that would be cool!

  • http://www.optimiced.com Michel

This is a really long extensive Fireworks list with extensions. Thank you for compiling it! :-)

Is Fw better than Ps, btw?

    ( You may not believe but… http://www.isfireworksbetterthanphotoshop.com ;-)

Yes, Fireworks is better than Ps, but for screen/Web design only! Fireworks was initially designed for Web & screen, so that’s why it is very good at that!

Ps was designed to edit photos and bitmaps.

Fw excels with vectors. Ps suxxz with vectors. And when you do Web design, vectors is what you most need! :)

So for me, as a Web designer, Fireworks is much better.

    @Matt, @Dave:

You are right — maybe the article could be updated? (I know it’s a bit old list, but that’s the fun with Web — you can edit and improve the content at any time.)

On a //sideline, I think that the useful extensions for Fireworks, which make it more powerful, are much more than 75… so maybe a new list could be created? :-)

make css sprites with fireworks extension, some like diagonal style or normal all can do, and some small tools can auto generate guide lines, import some picture named with filename and so on.

Appreciating the fact that this was written 3 years ago and I am still using Fireworks 8

    a) re: the Extrude Paths extension – do you find it works with FW? All I am getting is the/a ‘path cap’,  not the paths that make up the extrusion walls

    b) as far as the comparison to Photoshop wasn’t FW developed particularly for web graphics/design where PS was originally meant, and is obviously still used, for print but easily absorbs web requirements?
