      Hi Kevin,

You’ve left out Photofiltre’s free version. Very easy for quickly editing image files:

Inkscape is definitely not better than Corel Draw. Corel Draw is a massive suite of advanced tools that makes Illustrator and Inkscape look underpowered. Corel Draw can be used for any job that is not directly bitmap painting or image editing, but the Corel Suite includes a bitmap image editor. I would advise using Photoshop and Corel Draw as a good combo. Corel Draw is flexible enough that in one program, you can create your vector art, add vector based text and warp it with paths and envelopes, import more vector and bitmap work, type up text in columns while using page flow and layout an entire book or other document. Corel Draw is art program to layout program. It includes every tool, and many tools Adobe users have never seen before.

I have used Irfanview for years – never to edit images but as my default program for almost ALL image types. If I want to view a PSD or Fireworks PNG I don’t want to wait for these full applications to load – instead I have Irfanview set to open it for previews and if I want to edit the images I right click and select open with Photoshop, Fireworks etc.

I use Photoshop for editing photos and Fireworks for creating web graphics but Inkscape caught my attention here and I’ve been recommending GIMP (although not using it myself) for years.

If nothing else, the independent apps keep the big boys on their toes. I think it will be difficult to better the Photoshop/Illustrator combo, especially since Adobe has finally improved sharing between the two.

As someone already commented, Inkscape is cross-platform (see their website download page).

Also, you omitted Imagemagick, which is great for some things.

Don’t think anyone have mentioned it, but I found a program called Chocoflop, http://www.chocoflop.com/download_en.html, and it is free too. Only works for Mac OS X. Haven´t had the time to try it that much, but it looks good!

A small correction to note is that Inkscape and GIMP work on almost every OS, atleast, all major linux distro, mac, and windows.

Reading your post was like taking a trip down memory lane, back to when you could get great stuffs for free on the Internet! I remember using IrfanView for long (till I discovered Photoshop). These programs are good enough for student or casual designers, but the limited features will not attract the professionals.
