Thanks for writing about WP e-Commerce and posting a screenshot. We are working on our next release which we think is better and brighter then ever.

The most notable things to look forward to are new shipping modules, faster loading times, variations overhaul and a better user interface.

    Thanks again…

WP-Ecommerce is not easy to use.

In fact, it is a nightmare to implement and has wasted me significant time and money with at least two ecommerce clients. In addition, the support forum provides little help. I still have an unanswered request for help on the board from ages ago.

We just dumped WP-Ecommerce with a client last week and are seeking a decent cart plugin for them now.

Perhaps this plugin is easy to use for programmers, but I am not one; and I bet most users of this plugin are not either.

I too am suffering under the awful support provided by Wp-Commerce, which frankly lets the product down completely.

The support forum doesn’t support, if you email the support address as a paid user, you shouldn’t expect a quick response – it won’t be forthcoming.

Shame, because I quite liked wp-commerce even with the bugs – it’s let down completely by its support though.

I wasted 4 weeks trying to get wp-ecommerce to work. It installs easily enough and looks like it should work but the plugin is restrictive and does not allow you to manipulate categories as a nested menu list. To me this is something fundamental to even the most basic ecommerce site. That coupled with the unanswered questions on the forum from years back tells me the wp-ecommerce plugin is best avoided.

I have to say WP eCommerce is one of the most painful plug-ins I’ve ever had the displeasure of having to implement. I’ve personally fixed stacks of errors, and have you guys ever heard of Web Standards or Validation? Seriously the code output by WP eCommerce is embarrassing.

I’m installing WP e-Commerce on a clients site and learning how this great tool works. If we like it, more of our members will be pointed towards this application for their shopping carts. I hope to have my first site going by the weekend and use it as a demo for my presentation at our next Outsource Workshop the first weekend in November. I just blogged about WP e-Commerce today before I found your site.

Heads up. The WordPress e-Commerce plugin is about to release another version.

Speaking of APIs a lot of the core code behind the WordPress e-Commerce plugin has been written from scratch making it still the best e-Commerce solution for blogs on the market ;P

We have spent a lot of time on WordPress 2.7 integration. I am positively shaking at the knees – I can’t wait to get your feedback on this one :)

Functionality wise we have been following all e-commerce plugins and we still do one or two things that other plugins do not. The WP e-Commerce plugin is mature and has been in active development for over 4 years :P

Avoid WP-ecommerce like the plague. Purchased a commercial license & the gold cart to allow protx payments last week. There are so many bugs with this plugin, Protx only in test mode, constant changing permalinks, cart showed to only logged in users…I know its good for a free plugin, but if you fork out $200 for something you expect some support. They have support forums which are not answered by staff, just their friends who charge $75 [http://www.stasticdesigns.com/wpecommerce/] for 1hr WP-Ecommerce support. Avoid!

WP e-Commerce Plugin Update: The WordPress e-Commerce Plugin is rock solid… especially with the release of the WordPress e-Commerce Plugin 3.6.10 which is pure poetry.

The Protx payment gateway has been updated to work with WordPress 2.7 and the latest Gold Cart files.

Support is always given to nice people with big smiles (but not on the Weekends NZT) ;)

More ninkenpoopery from David (if that is your real name)…

The WordPress e-Commerce Plugin team have been contributing code to the WordPress community for well over 4 years – that is more then most Davey boy so show some respect ;)

The WordPress e-Commerce Plugin is a great tool with many great features designed for retailers and people wanting to sell goods online.

The WordPress e-Commerce Plugin team (us) are in our own forums every day, I am in our Blog every day, and we respond to as many emails as humanly possible… every day.

This reminds of a Bob Dylan song… “So how many bombs must be dropped before someone stops them forever?”

The WordPress e-Commerce Plugin just got featured on Smashing Magazine, which is a big site that do their research.

If the WP e-Commerce Plugin is good enough for them. Good enough for the thousands of people running paid upgrades then it is going to be good enough for the well to do readers on this blog who just want to get on with business and sell.

    Use the WordPress e-Commerce Plugin.

Sheesh Dan, Sharry and David were not attacking you or the wp e-commerce software. But it seems that something they said really ruffled your feathers. wp e-commerce has some great features, but to say it is “rock solid” may be one of the over statement of the year. I’ve used it with high hopes, and still hoping and watching for the bugs to be exterminated. But the truth is, I’ve lost clients because of the MANY bugs, and I’ve learned to only use it with clients and wordpress sites that won’t be using things like table rate product pricing, variation pricing and stock, and some other features that just are not usable. wp e-commerce really is one of the more mature wordpress ecommerce solutions out there, and maybe that’s why it’s so hard to take the fact that there are enough bugs to make it scary. A project this mature should have most of these things taken care of.

Now with that said, I’d really like to be a support to a project as worthy as yours. Where do I sign up? Is the best way to visit your website and leave a donation? ;-)

Keep up the good work, and get rid of those bugs as soon as it is possible.

I wanted to like WP e-commerce.. I really did.. I should have taken the hint when after installing the plugin I go to Ecommerce>Settings>Shipping and select the USPS module and saw the message “Known issue: USPS doesnt support shipping inside the US, cutomer zipcode needed, which we dont have before checkout”

Not to be discouraged I decided to use table rates instead. Only there’s one small hitch.. No way to support a separate rate table for international customers or even a way to add an additional handling fee for international customers.

In the end I mainly ended up ditching WP e-commerce because the shipping functions did not allow me any options to work with both domestic and international customers. Had there been a working fully functional USPS option, it would have solved my international shipping issues.

I’ve also used eShop. This plugin allows you to easily create products using WordPress Pages. While the setup of shop categories and products requires a little more “manual” work than WP e-commerce, I was able to ease the “manual” work by making use of the “Duplicate Post” plugin Enrico Battocchi.

The shipping options in eShop are limited to variations of different table shipping options. There are no tax options in eShop, but I worked around that by configuring the PayPal account to collect taxes during the PayPal payment process, and this worked just fine. (I made sure to inform customers that if they resided in X state, the tax would be added) Overall I had less issues with plugin incompatibilities using eShop than I did with WP e-commerce.. (I found that WP e-commerce had to be activated BEFORE all of my other plugins or some of the tables it needed would not be created or populated during the install)

IMO however, neither of these solutions is ideal for stores with more than 10-20 products. I think I will opt to NOT build anymore e-commerce sites using WordPress plugins (unless the client has 10 or less products to offer), but I will continue to keep an eye on these plugins. I hope to see some better shipping and tax options offered in future releases for both of these plugins as I think they are the closest to fully functioning e-commerce solutions available for WordPress.

We’ve done over a dozen WP_ecommerce projects, and I have a complete love / hate relationship, due to the bugs.

We’ve added well over $2o00 to their development through one project and a few donations, and in many / (mostly ALL cases) been extremely happy.

On the other hand, it IS hard t ocustomize, upgrades keep breaking things, and getting support and answers from them CAN be like pulling teeth – like this one – http://www.instinct.co.nz/affiliates-beta

I’m in need of a data import to shopping cart this week, I want an integrated affiliate program too, and I think I’m going to have look into one of these other carts here, and bail on Wp-ecommerce for this project ;(

(It’s buggy, but I like it a lot)

With the ‘Simple e-Commerce’ theme, there are no bulky plugins to install, no confusing administrative back-end files to navigate, and no tricky installation proceeds that normally cause extreme headaches. Should WordPress e-Commerce really be that difficult? I certainly don’t think so!

I recently placed an order for the Shopp Plugin based on reviews I’ve seen but ran into a problem during the order. Though my payment went through on PayPal, the Shopp site wouldn’t let me download the plugin. It says “awaiting payment.”

I tried to go through the company’s support process with no success. Jonathan Davis responding to my support request initially, but now will not respond. I would have liked to use the plugin, but since I can’t even place a successful order for it and download it, I wonder if it doesn’t work very well for virtual/downloadable products. Now I have to go through the hassle of PayPal dispute resolution to try to get Ingenesis Limited to give me my money back.

My recommendation is to stay away until the company can get it’s support and service in order. I can only imagine if my customers couldn’t download their products because of a faulty store software, what they would think!

And if Dan Milward spent more time answering questions in his forum as opposed to defending a poorly implemented and documented plugin, more of us would be willing to say nice things about this plugin. It sucks.

Rightly said Roger. It’s incredible how difficult it is to get help from the WP E-commerce people and why on earth would they try to be defending themselves on other blogs when CLEARLY they have a problem and should spend more time on quality control.

They’re also not answering questions directly, or proving that anyone else is wrong in their negative statements about it.

It hasn’t been mentioned yet, but there’s another alternative that might be perfect for what a lot of you are looking for.

It’s called “Market”, and it’s actually a theme with a shopping cart system built right into it.

    Market Theme
It’s perfect for the beginner who isn’t a technical wiz, or an experienced web person who just wants to save time so they can get to the next project.

The benefit of being a theme, is that it’s super quick and easy to setup, and you don’t have to worry about things not working right.

If you already have a WP theme that you like and don’t want to change, a lot of Market theme owners simply install a brand new instance of WordPress into a sub-folder (named store or something), and then just place a link on their homepage navigation to the store.

It’s easy to upload a logo, and change the colors around through the settings area, so you can make it fit right in with your existing theme colors if you desire.

There’s a demo version up and running on the Market theme website if you’d like to try it out before you commit to anything.

I have been looking for a shopmodule for WP. Started out with WP e-commerce, but sees alot of people wirting about Shopp. One problem was that I’m not sure how easy it would be to set it up, so that I can play a musicfile on every productpage, because I wanted to sell music, and it should be possible to prelisten to part of the music.

So I decided to get the WP-ecommerce Gold version plus the mp3 module, so I go to the site and clicks the buy button, and it just keeps loading and loading, but never puts anything in the basket.
If I press F5 to update I will see the product in the basket, but not before.
I used IE8 though it seems to work well enough in FireFox 3.5.
Should I assume that they use the module themselves at this is the one not working well in IE8?

Or does anyone else know about a owrking system where it would be possible to setup a player on each product to prelisten to the music I want to sell?

This is a great list and very helpful. There is a fairly new plugin at http://www.PHPurchase.com that we are using on our website. We used to use Shopp but recently switched. It was much less expensive and I really like how easy it is to configure. We only sell a couple products so we didn’t need all the fancy grid layouts and such that some of the other plugins have.

I’m sorry to hear that Paul – something weird must have happened. I wish we could have been of more help. Unfortunatly you must have fell through the support network – I’m sorry you’re so upset.

To say we’re useless is not true. We work really hard at what we do and for most people it just works – you would have been more accurate saying something went wrong and it did not work for me. Heck for all we know it may have been your theme or your server or even conflicting Plugins.

The official WordCamp organizers chose WP e-Commerce to sell tickets on the WordCamp website and over 730 attendees bought tickets successfully without any glitches – all the attendees know that WP e-Commerce works. Unless you think they are all useless too ;)

We had no issues installing WP e-Commerce on the wordcamp.org server. We copied the files into the correct MU folder on the wordcamp.org site. We clicked activate like most people do. We added the products. We helped setup Paypal and bingo it just worked.

The latest version of WP e-Commerce is pretty much rock solid. Also stay tuned for the book – I think the readers here should choose the WP e-Commerce Plugin that publishers choose because it must also have worked for them since they are about to release a new book.

    WP e-Commerce Plugin works for

      Dan you are soooo defensive!

Maybe do what I do when a little upset…
      1. type out the response you really want to send – but don’t hit that submit button
      2. Go make yourself a coffee (alcohol just wont work for this)
      3. come back to your desk, drink the coffee while reading the response
      4. now delete it all and type the response that is going to benfit your business not harm it further – and NEVER blame the customer!

I’ve been reading thru these posts and I cant see where you’re actually offering any help as opposed to defending your product. And suggesting something weird happened without trying to establish “what” is just poor.

Wow – I didn’t realize the folks from WP E-Commerce spend more time responding to negative feedback about their plugin than they do responding to their paying customers who need support. Another reason to look for something else.

I’m in the process of selecting an ecommerce cart solution to sell web design and SMB marketing products to my clients. I have about a dozen different products ranging from web design reviews for $99 to hosting for $29 a month, to custom design packages for $1499.

Many of the products will have options, some will have monthly recurring fees, some will have yearly payment options (if they don’t want to pay monthly), and some will have partial payment options (like paying 75% for the premium web site package). Some will have digital delivery of the end product, accompanying manuals and getting started books. Down the road, I want an affiliate program as well (probably unnecessary to mention but it could be important).

I know its a lot to ask, but I’m wondering if something like this even exists that could work. I prefer wordpress driven but I’m open to any open source or saas based solution too. I haven’t seen anything that fits the bill perfectly quite yet.

Hope it works like you say Dan, rock solid when my e-trade starts running! Gonna trust you on this.

Thanks so much for this post. It saves the rest of us so much time when beginning research on a topic if someone has put together a list and given a little commentary.

  55. Thanks for putting this together. I tried wp-ecommerce and a slew of others. Are there any that have slicker galleries? I don’t have an example, but Im looking for overlays that slide out versus page after page of info.

Either way, I’ll suffer through this stuff to keep it all in wordpress.

    Rock on!

Thw WP e-Commerce plugin doesn’t work with google checkout. It should, but bugs make it v difficult to get working.

This is worth knowing if you want to go the google route rather than the paypal route.

  60. I have wp-ecommerce and cannot get it to work. I purchased the Bible hoping that would solve my problems. No luck. I’ve tried to work with the wp-ecommerce bible forum but they have been very unresponsive. They basically told me they were to busy and not responsible for any problems with the plugin. The whole ordeal has been disappointing to say the least.

Okay, if you actually have gotten down to this comment, I have been trying the WP E-commerce solution and it was a pain. That is not to say that it is not powerful or that it cannot be set up correctly but I am just saying it was a bigger mess then I thought it should have been. I had to change drastic amounts of code to make it do what I wanted. In the end I dumped it because it simply was more trouble then it was worth ( I had spent 24 hours of my time slogging through and finding things and changing them half the time was spent just figuring out what module held what )

Look it is a fine e-commerce solution and you can plug it in really quick to get something going, just not for the project I worked on. I am sure it would have been fine if I was using it in a different way.

Anyway, I think success with that plugin will depend heavily on what you are using it for. Don’t not try to use it but I would suggest if after an hour you are still trying to make it do what you want then dump it, as I said I spent far too much time trying to force it to do what I wanted.

I use SHOPP Plugin and I love it. It is paid, but well worth it. If you are running e-commerce and are not interested in PAYING for your application you are kidding yourself. SHOPP is fantastic.

    Hi!
I downloaded this Shopp plugin and installed it from the website http://www.hipperz.nl/shop/leren-shopper-legend-blauw/
but it doesn’t seem to be working fine. The product pages become garbled and instead of showing thumbnails of related products, only links to related products are displayed.
I have posted on the forum related to this and tried doing everything that has been suggested but not to much avail.

Can u help? I use thesis theme and version 2.9.2 MU of WordPress.

I came across this post as I recently finished a site using wp-ecommerce and have been so disheartened by it’s many bugs and lack of support that I think I need to search out a new stable solution and redo my client’s site. Does anyone know if any alternatives have come up since this article was written? Does anybody have any additional information on the Shopp plugin?

    Thanks.

WP E-commerce is one of the worst plug-ins I have ever used. It’s full of bugs. The developers have no interest in supporting their community, and they are rude. I don’t encourage anyone to use WP E-commerce. Look for something else.

It’s so funny that Dan (wp ecommerce) is giving all the notification of plugin update here. Who wants to use this bullshit plugin which is full of bugs? They only comes first in the search result as they developed this plugin earlier. In their support forum they don’t even reply to the customer. One reply might come in every 6 months. I would rather buy WP eStore plugin.

@Dan, your plug-in needs work. Ignore the flamers
WP e-Commerce Plug-in misses several very important features a well designed e-commerce solution should have. I looked at the gold cart, but all I could see was that money was being spent on more payment methods. I installed it, tried it, found it didn’t meet my needs and uninstalled it. the recommendation above or Smashing and the flaming means little. I’ll check the others noted, but will probably stick with a non integrated solution.

Shopp Plugin would be perfect if they only had invoice adjustment. Once an order is placed, you can’t go into the order and change it. This might be crucial if you were out-of-stock on something and need to refund the difference, change the shipping address after the fact. Seems even wp-commerce is missing this functionality.

WordPress is magic. It is one of the best blogging platforms, which has become as good as a CMS now. You can even build a complete website with it.

While working for all these years in WOrdPress, we have realized how flexible it is when it comes to customization and integration of themes and plugins.

We have also build numerous templates, themes, and plugins for WordPress which have been used for many of our clients’ projects.

The plugins which you have mentioned here work great for e-commerce portals. We know, because we have tried it. Good job. Nice post.

Does anyone know if any of the WP Integrated shopping carts can be used on both WP AND html sites? I design both, mostly for artists who need web galleries they can sell from. I’d prefer something that’s very customizable so that it can work with my current designs instead of creating a totally different look that I can’t integrate.

If there isn’t such a thing as a single package that does this, is there one that is an open source for html sites that also has a WP-interface, so that I won’t have to completely re-learn the software for both applications? (I create my html sites with Dreamweaver, if it matters).
