Great list. Bookmarked and will be a great reference in my WP projects. Thanks. :-)

  • http://www.instinct.co.nz/e-commerce Dan Milward

Thanks for writing about WP e-Commerce and posting a screenshot. We are working on our next release which we think is better and brighter then ever.

The most notable things to look forward to are new shipping modules, faster loading times, variations overhaul and a better user interface.

    Thanks again…

    • Luis

We have had tons of issues with WP-Ecommerce. I can’t believe how many errors are in your code! Buyer Beware if you get this plug-in

      • http://10thpla.net Andy

Tech support is dire for both paid and free versions.

      • Em Dash

I’m afraid I have to agree with Luis. I had to re-write a LOT of the functions to simply make WP e-Commerce work as advertised, and I’m now stuck being unable to upgrade as it’ll re-break everything ever…

After spending a good 80+ hours recoding EVERYTHING to make the stupid thing work for our client, I have to say that WP e-Commerce was responsible not only for hundreds of lost client e-commerce sales, but a good $8,000+ of non-billable hours for my studio.

I know the $40 price for Gold Cart seems like a small investment, but the hidden cost of using fundamentally broken software is massive.

    • Randy

Your program stinks and you have terrible support.

      • http://www.bobdebilder.net Bob

very sad to read the feedback about

        instinct’s e-commerce

as the poor support has been a complaint for a few years already.

this puts this eCommerce plugin to the back of the list yet again

        Bob

    • greg

WP-Ecommerce is not easy to use.

In fact, it is a nightmare to implement and has wasted me significant time and money with at least two ecommerce clients. In addition, the support forum provides little help. I still have an unanswered request for help on the board from ages ago.

We just dumped WP-Ecommerce with a client last week and are seeking a decent cart plugin for them now.

Perhaps this plugin is easy to use for programmers, but I am not one; and I bet most users of this plugin are not either.

      • http://www.robbellwebdesign.com Rob

I too am suffering under the awful support provided by Wp-Commerce, which frankly lets the product down completely.

The support forum doesn’t support, if you email the support address as a paid user, you shouldn’t expect a quick response – it won’t be forthcoming.

Shame, because I quite liked wp-commerce even with the bugs – it’s let down completely by its support though.

      • Jonathan

I wasted 4 weeks trying to get wp-ecommerce to work. It installs easily enough and looks like it should work but the plugin is restrictive and does not allow you to manipulate categories as a nested menu list. To me this is something fundamental to even the most basic ecommerce site. That coupled with the unanswered questions on the forum from years back tells me the wp-ecommerce plugin is best avoided.

      • http://dukapress.org Kelvin
      • http://www.paulmccrodden.com mccrodp

Thank God other people agree. This has wasted me way more time then I’d have liked. I find the interface basic but ok for what I wanted. The code and non existent API docs however are just awful. It makes no sense to me at all coming from the superb Ubercart module for Drupal. The support for wp-ecommerce was pretty poor in my case too, non existent!

I will now try eShop and failing that go premium on a different plugin as there seems to be a few to choose from.

        ~mccrodp

      • zoran

I spent 7 days in hardcore programming just to clean up the code from the wp commerce plugin and all the bugs and at the end i just gave up, I’d rather write my own plugin than fixing someone elses spaghetti code.

      • http://rocknrollvapor.com Jeff

I agree Greg, this has been the worst experience I have ever had with webdesign I have EP ecommerce and the Gold cart plugin and I have wasted weeks and lost business. They have zero support and bugs in the software. awful!

    • Greg

Why does WordPress slow down significantly after loading your plugin?

    • http://www.249designs.com/ David B

Ouch..!! No reaction or help for the users with problems.? Scary.

    • Mikey

I have to say WP eCommerce is one of the most painful plug-ins I’ve ever had the displeasure of having to implement. I’ve personally fixed stacks of errors, and have you guys ever heard of Web Standards or Validation? Seriously the code output by WP eCommerce is embarrassing.

    • http://www.bunderfulife.com Kristin Parker

WP e-Commerce is HORRIBLE. There are issues documented in your forums that still haven’t been addressed years later. Google Checkout creates a nightmare on the backend of extra sales logs with false dates, no user address info, and wrong itemized receipts. The final order cost of any Paypal orders is wrong in the sales logs due to some rounding of values going on in the PHP code, so users are agreeing to pay one amount upon checkout on your site and a slightly different amount when they actually pay via Paypal. This is unacceptable. Your users are actually writing code to fix all these problems because your company won’t.

    • withheld by request

WP e-Commerce is a great idea in concept but it is total rubbish in execution.

After months of frustration and embarrassment my client and I had a (thankfully) civil parting of the ways. I lost all of the fees for site development, not just the lost time trying untangle the plugin mess.

The copywriters and owners of the company behind WP e-Commerce should consider the implications for their organisation should someone bring a case under New Zealand’s Fair Trading Act or Consumer Guarantees Act.

Not fit for purpose, does not deliver as promised.

That said, I wish the gushy ‘reviewers’ who write in sites like this – see posting above – would actually try installing and configuring the software/plugin before they trust and simply re-purpose the blurb put out by the people hawking substandard software. Just as contemptable, IMHO.

  • http://www.danmassicottespositiveliving.com/ Daniel Massicotte

    These are all free right?

If they are, this is a big WOW! I can’t believe the tools. Everyone should have the auction feature especially with paypal’s secure payment systems.

  • http://shopplugin.net Jon Davis

There is also Shopp which is a new e-commerce plugin for WordPress. It’s still in beta, but progress is fast and furious. You can still apply for the beta to get a copy to try out.

  • http://whoishenry.com Henry

I’m installing WP e-Commerce on a clients site and learning how this great tool works. If we like it, more of our members will be pointed towards this application for their shopping carts. I hope to have my first site going by the weekend and use it as a demo for my presentation at our next Outsource Workshop the first weekend in November. I just blogged about WP e-Commerce today before I found your site.

@ Andrew; Cheers mate. It is always good to see and talk to other Kiwi based WP fans :)

@ Henry; stick with WP e-Commerce and you’ll be right!!!

The WordPress e-Commrece plugin is gearing up for another release. The next version is hot… ouch ;)

  • http://www.jonahcoyote.com Jonah

Don’t overlook this one either – it looks to be a major contender with WP e-Commerce: http://tribulant.com/products/view/10/wordpress-shopping-cart-plugin

  • http://www.hilta.nl opicron

I am missing the Shopp plugin on this list. This is an brand new eCommerce plugin which is in my opinion one of the best. Currently I am using it in various sites. The UI and functionality is way ahead of any plugin in the field.

    • Dave

I agree, after reading bad reviews of wp-ecommerce, I found Shopp and, I was pleasantly surprised with how well this plug-in works!

  • http://www.instinct.co.nz/e-commerce Dan Milward

Heads up. The WordPress e-Commerce plugin is about to release another version.

Speaking of APIs a lot of the core code behind the WordPress e-Commerce plugin has been written from scratch making it still the best e-Commerce solution for blogs on the market ;P

We have spent a lot of time on WordPress 2.7 integration. I am positively shaking at the knees – I can’t wait to get your feedback on this one :)

Functionality wise we have been following all e-commerce plugins and we still do one or two things that other plugins do not. The WP e-Commerce plugin is mature and has been in active development for over 4 years :P

    • Michael

Dan, this isn’t your personal marketing site. You post all over blogs and while I understand you want to get your product out, you are border-line spamming.

Maybe you ought to spend more time just focused on work?

    • http://inweb.com.au Stef

Dan maybe instead of hyping up your product you could be on here answering the list of upset users that have posted here??
I also have wp-commerce running on a few client sites – yet I’ve come here looking for a better solution.

      • http://www.sandstonedigital.com Doug

        Same here, Stef.

Too bad Dan seems to keep talking about a bigger and better version…every time I’ve upgraded WP eCommerce has been a nightmare of bug fixing.

Just make a product that works…people will flock to you, Dan.

Avoid WP-ecommerce like the plague. Purchased a commercial license & the gold cart to allow protx payments last week. There are so many bugs with this plugin, Protx only in test mode, constant changing permalinks, cart showed to only logged in users…I know its good for a free plugin, but if you fork out $200 for something you expect some support. They have support forums which are not answered by staff, just their friends who charge $75 [http://www.stasticdesigns.com/wpecommerce/] for 1hr WP-Ecommerce support. Avoid!

WP e-Commerce Plugin Update: The WordPress e-Commerce Plugin is rock solid… especially with the release of the WordPress e-Commerce Plugin 3.6.10 which is pure poetry.

The Protx payment gateway has been updated to work with WordPress 2.7 and the latest Gold Cart files.

Support is always given to nice people with big smiles (but not on the Weekends NZT) ;)

    • http://www.sandstonedigital.com Doug

ROCK SOLID?!? You haven’t been to your own forums lately, have you?? This is almost 2 years later and the thing is still riddled with bugs.

      ROCK SOLID?!? Really??

      • Whisper

You can’t be serious.. I purchased a Gold Cart, I have a forum support listing that is unanswered for over 12 months now, I have had one user reply trying to offer some help and another reply from a user also (no staff) stating they are having the same problems.

Seriously bad support, I think it is very greedy and selfish of you to sell your product and ignore support, you just keep on flogging your dead horse on here without even addressing any of the hundreds of posts slamming your product?

  • David Bourkeoviz

I agree with Sharry, WP e-Commerce is bug ridden, and very very hard ot make work right, the forums have one awesome guy called shayne, but aside from that there is no help at all!

  • http://www.instinct.co.nz/e-commerce Dan Milward

More ninkenpoopery from David (if that is your real name)…

The WordPress e-Commerce Plugin team have been contributing code to the WordPress community for well over 4 years – that is more then most Davey boy so show some respect ;)

The WordPress e-Commerce Plugin is a great tool with many great features designed for retailers and people wanting to sell goods online.

The WordPress e-Commerce Plugin team (us) are in our own forums every day, I am in our Blog every day, and we respond to as many emails as humanly possible… every day.

This reminds of a Bob Dylan song… “So how many bombs must be dropped before someone stops them forever?”

The WordPress e-Commerce Plugin just got featured on Smashing Magazine, which is a big site that do their research.

If the WP e-Commerce Plugin is good enough for them. Good enough for the thousands of people running paid upgrades then it is going to be good enough for the well to do readers on this blog who just want to get on with business and sell.

    Use the WordPress e-Commerce Plugin.

  • Will

Sheesh Dan, Sharry and David were not attacking you or the wp e-commerce software. But it seems that something they said really ruffled your feathers. wp e-commerce has some great features, but to say it is “rock solid” may be one of the over statement of the year. I’ve used it with high hopes, and still hoping and watching for the bugs to be exterminated. But the truth is, I’ve lost clients because of the MANY bugs, and I’ve learned to only use it with clients and wordpress sites that won’t be using things like table rate product pricing, variation pricing and stock, and some other features that just are not usable. wp e-commerce really is one of the more mature wordpress ecommerce solutions out there, and maybe that’s why it’s so hard to take the fact that there are enough bugs to make it scary. A project this mature should have most of these things taken care of.

Now with that said, I’d really like to be a support to a project as worthy as yours. Where do I sign up? Is the best way to visit your website and leave a donation? ;-)

Keep up the good work, and get rid of those bugs as soon as it is possible.

    Will

    Nice ecomerce plugin

  • Roger Sanjay

    try this too http://www.sitemile.com/storepress.php
it is very easy to install and has lots of features

  • Dawn Sinclair

I wanted to like WP e-commerce.. I really did.. I should have taken the hint when after installing the plugin I go to Ecommerce>Settings>Shipping and select the USPS module and saw the message “Known issue: USPS doesnt support shipping inside the US, cutomer zipcode needed, which we dont have before checkout”

Not to be discouraged I decided to use table rates instead. Only there’s one small hitch.. No way to support a separate rate table for international customers or even a way to add an additional handling fee for international customers.

In the end I mainly ended up ditching WP e-commerce because the shipping functions did not allow me any options to work with both domestic and international customers. Had there been a working fully functional USPS option, it would have solved my international shipping issues.

I’ve also used eShop. This plugin allows you to easily create products using WordPress Pages. While the setup of shop categories and products requires a little more “manual” work than WP e-commerce, I was able to ease the “manual” work by making use of the “Duplicate Post” plugin Enrico Battocchi.

The shipping options in eShop are limited to variations of different table shipping options. There are no tax options in eShop, but I worked around that by configuring the PayPal account to collect taxes during the PayPal payment process, and this worked just fine. (I made sure to inform customers that if they resided in X state, the tax would be added) Overall I had less issues with plugin incompatibilities using eShop than I did with WP e-commerce.. (I found that WP e-commerce had to be activated BEFORE all of my other plugins or some of the tables it needed would not be created or populated during the install)

IMO however, neither of these solutions is ideal for stores with more than 10-20 products. I think I will opt to NOT build anymore e-commerce sites using WordPress plugins (unless the client has 10 or less products to offer), but I will continue to keep an eye on these plugins. I hope to see some better shipping and tax options offered in future releases for both of these plugins as I think they are the closest to fully functioning e-commerce solutions available for WordPress.

  • http://korbyimagery.com Shanna

Where can I go for an honest review of WP eCommerce plugins? Every site I find has (apparently) the same two people flaming each other over how great/terrible WP eCommerce is. I think I will try something else to avoid the conflict and hopefully get honest and helpful responses.

We’ve done over a dozen WP_ecommerce projects, and I have a complete love / hate relationship, due to the bugs.

We’ve added well over $2o00 to their development through one project and a few donations, and in many / (mostly ALL cases) been extremely happy.

On the other hand, it IS hard t ocustomize, upgrades keep breaking things, and getting support and answers from them CAN be like pulling teeth – like this one – http://www.instinct.co.nz/affiliates-beta

I’m in need of a data import to shopping cart this week, I want an integrated affiliate program too, and I think I’m going to have look into one of these other carts here, and bail on Wp-ecommerce for this project ;(

(It’s buggy, but I like it a lot)

I’m about to release an extremely simple solution for WordPress e-Commerce. ‘Simple e-Commerce’ is a theme I’ve developed to utilize the existing functionality of WordPress CMS to provide an e-Commerce solutions for all WordPress users. With the ‘Simple e-Commerce’ theme, there are no bulky plugins to install, no confusing administrative back-end files to navigate, and no tricky installation proceeds that normally cause extreme headaches. Should WordPress e-Commerce really be that difficult? I certainly don’t think so!

I recently placed an order for the Shopp Plugin based on reviews I’ve seen but ran into a problem during the order. Though my payment went through on PayPal, the Shopp site wouldn’t let me download the plugin. It says “awaiting payment.”

I tried to go through the company’s support process with no success. Jonathan Davis responding to my support request initially, but now will not respond. I would have liked to use the plugin, but since I can’t even place a successful order for it and download it, I wonder if it doesn’t work very well for virtual/downloadable products. Now I have to go through the hassle of PayPal dispute resolution to try to get Ingenesis Limited to give me my money back.

My recommendation is to stay away until the company can get it’s support and service in order. I can only imagine if my customers couldn’t download their products because of a faulty store software, what they would think!

I can attest along with quite a lot of us trying to use wp-ecommerce that it simply doesn’t work out of the box. And if Dan Milward spent more time answering questions in his forum as opposed to defending a poorly implemented and documented plugin, more of us would be willing to say nice things about this plugin. It sucks.

    • http://www.beaureview.net beautyblogger

Rightly said Roger. It’s incredible how difficult it is to get help from the WP E-commerce people and why on earth would they try to be defending themselves on other blogs when CLEARLY they have a problem and should spend more time on quality control.

They’re also not answering questions directly, or proving that anyone else is wrong in their negative statements about it.

  • Adam

Everyone reading this should check out ShopperPress,( http://www.shopperpress.com/ ) a very polished e-commerce plugin for WordPress that deserves some attention here, especially among those dissatisfied with WP-Ecommerce. Mark Fail is the man.

and uh Jonah, tribulant should try putting together a demo that will successfully load before attempting to sell anything. lol.

    • http://www.asthormania.com Neo

This theme is totally full of bugs.. I been dealing w/ Mark fail for almost two Years and for every bug or problem you have to wait for the next update.. so i been waiting and waiting and so far no solutions to same bugs..

They have a support dept. but even like that .. each update to fix bugs is always around 4 to 5 months.

So far my web site never had sold anything due to check out process that it has a lot of problems.. already explain the problems to support but same answer .. “Wait for next updates” and when they provide the new version updates.. new bugs came with it.. If you get this theme application expect to be waiting months for problems to be solve..

Nothing against Mark … But seriously for a costumer that have same bug problems w/ this application for about two yrs is a shame ..

And I have proof of that..

  • Eli

It hasn’t been mentioned yet, but there’s another alternative that might be perfect for what a lot of you are looking for.

It’s called “Market”, and it’s actually a theme with a shopping cart system built right into it.

    Market Theme
It’s perfect for the beginner who isn’t a technical wiz, or an experienced web person who just wants to save time so they can get to the next project.

The benefit of being a theme, is that it’s super quick and easy to setup, and you don’t have to worry about things not working right.

If you already have a WP theme that you like and don’t want to change, a lot of Market theme owners simply install a brand new instance of WordPress into a sub-folder (named store or something), and then just place a link on their homepage navigation to the store.

It’s easy to upload a logo, and change the colors around through the settings area, so you can make it fit right in with your existing theme colors if you desire.

There’s a demo version up and running on the Market theme website if you’d like to try it out before you commit to anything.

I have been looking for a shopmodule for WP. Started out with WP e-commerce, but sees alot of people wirting about Shopp. One problem was that I’m not sure how easy it would be to set it up, so that I can play a musicfile on every productpage, because I wanted to sell music, and it should be possible to prelisten to part of the music.

So I decided to get the WP-ecommerce Gold version plus the mp3 module, so I go to the site and clicks the buy button, and it just keeps loading and loading, but never puts anything in the basket.
If I press F5 to update I will see the product in the basket, but not before.
I used IE8 though it seems to work well enough in FireFox 3.5.
Should I assume that they use the module themselves at this is the one not working well in IE8?

Or does anyone else know about a owrking system where it would be possible to setup a player on each product to prelisten to the music I want to sell?

Great list! I am looking forward to trying out WP e-commerce and seeing how it compares to osCommerce which is what I have been using for a while now. In any event, thank you for this compiled list!

  • Kendall

This is a great list and very helpful. There is a fairly new plugin at http://www.PHPurchase.com that we are using on our website. We used to use Shopp but recently switched. It was much less expensive and I really like how easy it is to configure. We only sell a couple products so we didn’t need all the fancy grid layouts and such that some of the other plugins have.

  • Paul

I have been trying to get some support from the WP-Ecommerce guys.. and they are absolutely useless. there are so many bugs with their system it’s not funny. I’ve had to start from scratch on a client site now.. I won’t be touching WP Ecommerce ever again.

    WP e-Commerce Plugin Update
I’m sorry to hear that Paul – something weird must have happened. I wish we could have been of more help. Unfortunatly you must have fell through the support network – I’m sorry you’re so upset.

To say we’re useless is not true. We work really hard at what we do and for most people it just works – you would have been more accurate saying something went wrong and it did not work for me. Heck for all we know it may have been your theme or your server or even conflicting Plugins.

The official WordCamp organizers chose WP e-Commerce to sell tickets on the WordCamp website and over 730 attendees bought tickets successfully without any glitches – all the attendees know that WP e-Commerce works. Unless you think they are all useless too ;)

We had no issues installing WP e-Commerce on the wordcamp.org server. We copied the files into the correct MU folder on the wordcamp.org site. We clicked activate like most people do. We added the products. We helped setup Paypal and bingo it just worked.

The latest version of WP e-Commerce is pretty much rock solid. Also stay tuned for the book – I think the readers here should choose the WP e-Commerce Plugin that publishers choose because it must also have worked for them since they are about to release a new book.

      Dan you are soooo defensive!

Maybe do what I do when a little upset…
      1. type out the response you really want to send – but don’t hit that submit button
      2. Go make yourself a coffee (alcohol just wont work for this)
      3. come back to your desk, drink the coffee while reading the response
      4. now delete it all and type the response that is going to benfit your business not harm it further – and NEVER blame the customer!

I’ve been reading thru these posts and I cant see where you’re actually offering any help as opposed to defending your product. And suggesting something weird happened without trying to establish “what” is just poor.

      • Roy Gabe

Wow – I didn’t realize the folks from WP E-Commerce spend more time responding to negative feedback about their plugin than they do responding to their paying customers who need support. Another reason to look for something else.

    • daniel

      Hey Dan Milward –

Why do you advertise that FirstData is supported in WP eCommerce Gold Plug-in?

And then when it does not work, you refuse to answer a trouble ticket about it?

If your product does not integrate with FirstData Global Gateway, why advertise as such?

Beginning to think my client deserves a refund, but would rather just see the thing work.

I’m in the process of selecting an ecommerce cart solution to sell web design and SMB marketing products to my clients. I have about a dozen different products ranging from web design reviews for $99 to hosting for $29 a month, to custom design packages for $1499.

Many of the products will have options, some will have monthly recurring fees, some will have yearly payment options (if they don’t want to pay monthly), and some will have partial payment options (like paying 75% for the premium web site package). Some will have digital delivery of the end product, accompanying manuals and getting started books. Down the road, I want an affiliate program as well (probably unnecessary to mention but it could be important).

I know its a lot to ask, but I’m wondering if something like this even exists that could work. I prefer wordpress driven but I’m open to any open source or saas based solution too. I haven’t seen anything that fits the bill perfectly quite yet.

The whole ordeal has been disappointing to say the least.

Okay, if you actually have gotten down to this comment, I have been trying the WP E-commerce solution and it was a pain. That is not to say that it is not powerful or that it cannot be set up correctly but I am just saying it was a bigger mess then I thought it should have been. I had to change drastic amounts of code to make it do what I wanted. In the end I dumped it because it simply was more trouble then it was worth ( I had spent 24 hours of my time slogging through and finding things and changing them half the time was spent just figuring out what module held what )

Look it is a fine e-commerce solution and you can plug it in really quick to get something going, just not for the project I worked on. I am sure it would have been fine if I was using it in a different way.

Anyway, I think success with that plugin will depend heavily on what you are using it for. Don’t not try to use it but I would suggest if after an hour you are still trying to make it do what you want then dump it, as I said I spent far too much time trying to force it to do what I wanted.

@Dan, your plug-in needs work. Ignore the flamers
WP e-Commerce Plug-in misses several very important features a well designed e-commerce solution should have. I looked at the gold cart, but all I could see was that money was being spent on more payment methods. I installed it, tried it, found it didn’t meet my needs and uninstalled it. the recommendation above or Smashing and the flaming means little. I’ll check the others noted, but will probably stick with a non integrated solution.

Shopp Plugin would be perfect if they only had invoice adjustment. Once an order is placed, you can’t go into the order and change it. This might be crucial if you were out-of-stock on something and need to refund the difference, change the shipping address after the fact. Seems even wp-commerce is missing this functionality.

Does anyone know if any of the WP Integrated shopping carts can be used on both WP AND html sites? I design both, mostly for artists who need web galleries they can sell from. I’d prefer something that’s very customizable so that it can work with my current designs instead of creating a totally different look that I can’t integrate.

If there isn’t such a thing as a single package that does this, is there one that is an open source for html sites that also has a WP-interface, so that I won’t have to completely re-learn the software for both applications? (I create my html sites with Dreamweaver, if it matters).

Wow! What a great list of information, although it seems like there’s no clear winner here… :(

Could it be that we (WordPress Lovers) are trying to make it into something it isn’t? I’m just saying…

It’s a fantastic Blog/CMS, but I don’t think it’s ready for heavy duty e-commerce? I’m just giving you the other side of the coin here… My company specializes in e-commerce and I’d love to use WordPress, but using open source applications to take credit cards and other really sensitive customer data – I’m out. It’s just not worth the risk, for me.

Sure it’s probably fine for selling a couple widgets, but a full blown estore… You better have one heck of a security suite! Sure, you can use PayPal – if you like the high fee’s – but I’ve had PayPal accounts get hacked, so we’ll give client’s the option, but it’s never the main payment gateway! Never.

My main problem with WordPress for e-commerce is this:

    - No one here has mentioned back-ups or import/export yet? Don’t forget about the future of your client’s store – I’m sure they won’t want to add all the products in, again.
    - Security? I see only a couple here that support PCI+SSL, but you’ve also got to remember the applications security as well – WordPress + whatever you install into it!

Unfortunately, there’s little if no information on Product Data Exporting, Security, Customer Management, Shipping, and everything else an e-commerce client should expect.

Anyways, thanks for all the great links, posts, and info! This was one of the better ones I came across in my search – nice job everyone!

    PS. STORE OWNERS / DESIGNERS:
If you’re truly looking to build a functional, safe, and dynamic store – and you’re serious about your client/products. It’s usually better to pay for something – Open Source is great and all, but it’s meant for Social, Ministry, Probono, Education type work – If your charging clients, give them what they pay for…. Quality. Don’t get me wrong, WordPress is fantastic – so if you do use it for a smaller e-commerce project, don’t be afraid to pay for the e-commerce plugin you’re going to use.

In the end, I see a lot of folks complaining that WordPress won’t do this or that, or that the plugins suck because they don’t integrate with FedEx or whatever, you name it – it’s been complained about. The truth is this – WordPress is never going to be a Magento, Shopify or Business Catalyst – So, be happy with what it is. A great blogging platform and a good small-business CMS.

I wonder… When did we get so cheap? Myself included!
(makes me remember my Joomla days, never again – never again.)

    That’s my 2 cents.

    • http://www.jeronone.com Sandeep Goyal

      @J

      True words, mate!
If you really want a e-store, head over to magento, or some other ecommerce cms.
Wordpress is best with what it is.
Nothing can be perfect in all.

but i still have a few customers with a few products (10-15), who want to integrate a shopping cart with their wordpress site.
That’s why i came here to find a stable shopping cart plugin with a thought of wp ecommerce.
But after seeing many of folks complaining here to it, i think, i should give a chance to shopp plugin.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/QWKD4B4BPE7TRLO67HDQZZ7PBE Jonny Parker

Well put. Most just do not want to style a cart to look like a wordpress themes. There is really no point in putting a cart which is generally a larger software within wordpress. Yeah if you have one or two items you not selling in volume may be worth using a plugin.

Anyone know of a WordPress shop plugin that does not require you to have a shopping cart but still allows you to have multiple pictures for a product like the Shopp plugin.

We want this setup but without the option to buy.

I never got this piece of crap to work either. I don’t mind paying for a solution that works, don’t get me wrong, but if the basic one doesn’t work, why should I believe the “Gold” pay version will? I am now looking at ShopperPress.com anyone else here care to comment? I really am done wasting my time. I need something that works, and am very willing to pay for it.

Glad I found this. I have a client that uses wp eStore which worked flawlessly but only has google and paypal gateways. He wants to change over to authorize.net so I started looking for a plugin. eCommerce? Spent hours trying to get it to work with PP Standard just to make the switch. Finally got it to process order only it leaves every order pending. Search their support to find out this problem is 2 YEARS old and authorize.net has the same issue. No Thanks…
Shopp looks promising but I have to pay $25 more to get authorize.net gateway.

I think Shopp is the best!

  • Cline

Same here, stumbled upon this just after leaving the Shopp site. I’d rather pay $ and be confident about the support and compatibility than a free plug in. Maybe a thorough review of the Shopp plug in is in order?

thanks for sharing, better if you can put a screenshot demo for each cart plugin.

Yeah, I have read all kind of comments about wp e Commerce. My problem with it is that the free version does not come with a grid layout for the store, and the paid version seems to be unsupported by now.

Any suggestion for a great plugin?

Saw this post and thought i would throw my hat into the ring so to speak. My team are about a week away from creating the “holy grail” of wordpress ecommerce a fully functional and secure osCommerce plug in for WP.

Yes it is a monster task, but thankfully i have a genius running the team and we are 80% with no issues to date.

We are also looking for beta testers..you can sign up at http://www.wponlinestore.com

I’ve used a few ecommerce sites in the past and have installed Shopp on a customer site.

It is my first and last Shopp implementation.

The cart is limited, documenation is lacking support is terrible, and forum is not very active.

    A terible experience.

    Got a question….
I want to have a products page on my site (WP) however, I don’t need them to checkout (like a shopping cart) because I will guide them to a actual site that they will checkout on. I want to be able to feed though the products through google base and such. What plugin would you recommend? I tried downloading the wp ecommerce site but it didn’t download correctly. Any suggestions from you brilliant people. :)

New kid on the block checkout:

    http://jigoshop.com

Free version available in a few weeks, built on WP3.0 framework, custom post types and taxonomies, attribute filtering, reviews, up sells, cross sells, one page checkout, it’s going to be great!

  • Prosthetic Lips

@Cataylor Ava: I have the same issue, with a twist — my products are not off-the-shelf items, but more of a “tell me what you need, and I’ll give you a quote.” So, I’d like a system that can give me simple buttons (6 chairs, 1 table), but also a place for the user to tell me what they would also like. I’m evaluating Quick Shop for this, but I’m seeing some enhancements I’m going to have to make (ugh).

Any suggestions for something where I want to be able to suggest items, but let the user specify, and send to me as a “quote” system?

WP e-Commerce is definitely the best WP plugin for e-commerce web sites based on wordpress cms although is not perfect and has some issues. For serious e-commerce web pages i would recommend joomla because it is better cms for these kind of web sites. By my opinion wordpress i better blogging tool while for business solutions joomla still has advantage over wordpress. WP e-Commerce is definitely the best WP plugin for e-commerce web sites based on wordpress cms although is not perfect and has some issues. I had shopp and hated it. But I really like this one.

We also had a nightmare using the Shopp plug-in for a few of our customers but the last straw came when helped them out fixing their Sagepay payment module and they still wanted to charge us for additional support. Eventually we thought the only way we could offer our customers a reliable stable solution is if we built one ourselves.

Well I can now announce that after months of development and many late nights we are launching Jigoshop. http://jigoshop.com. The feature packed free version will be on WordPress.com on Tuesday 31st May the Premium version should follow over the next few weeks.

It would be great if you’d give it a try and let us know how you get on. It may finally be an eCommerce solution that actually works.

    • rashid

Thanks jigowatt, I just installed Jigoshop for a new client, and I have to say, that its a decent plugin, though haven’t got to code around it yet, but its simple, effective and actually works and I hate wp_ecommerce so much now :) Just one thing, Is it possible to do something like icondock.com with jigoshop without too much coding? Is ajax thing built into it?

Wp e-Commerce is ok, albeit quite complicated to use. Personally, I prefer ShopperPress. It’s certainly the best in its price range. I can use it as an affiliate store. An online shop, or even use it as a download store to sell music. It definitely gets my vote. Cheers.

hi guys, i have a question
i would like to turn my WP blog into an e-commerce store, but i dont want to loose my ranks, did someone ever done that before?i thought about switching to magento but i m afraid  to “kill” my siteplease advise!

  • JSA

Is it possible to set up user forms in WordPress and assign application fees to the forms, so that they are not submitted to the admin unless the fee payment has been made?

There would also need to be a way for the admin to associate the submitted form with the payment received (from whatever payment portal was being used).

Any plugin help or advice would be greatlyappreciated. Thanks!!!

I’ve just DONE wp-ecommerce and I won’ touch their service or product again. The whole process is shambolic and unprofessional I don’t care how pretty they make their front page look.

    Hi Paul
I would like to point out my plug-in SyncFu which enables any WordPress site to offer group buying deals (or daily deals if you may) on any blog or site. The integration is very simple and easy to use
you can check the integration process in herehttp://www.slideshare.net/barsade/word-press-plug-in-flow

WP-Ecommerce is a NIGHTMARE. If you buy the Goldcart ugrade, the multi-image, multiple image function does not work. The support is non-existent and I highly recommend checking out the current complaint list before even trying to use GetShopped or any of their products.  I have wasted days trying to manipulate this to work and I can safely say I actually know what I am doing. I can imagine the horrible problems people who don’t know how to program are having. Check out this page before buying or installing. http://getshopped.org/forums/

  • Marcel

Do not use tribulants shopping cart plugin unless you want endless conflicts, bad support and when you finally give up you will get told its against our policy to give refunds. What a joke, what sort of company wont give a refund for an unsuitable product!

Don’t make the same mistake i did!

What a nightmare wp ecommerce plugin is and whats worse I purchased gold ecommerce and still things were bad, little support even though I apaid for it. Really cheesed off with it

They have 2 weeks free trial.

Stay away from getshopped.org’s wp-ecommerce.   The support will cost you thousands of dollars in lost time.  I could never get it working and paid for support too.   They refuse to refund me.  I tried other ones and could see quickly if they worked or not and finally settled with thecartpress.com’s plugin.  Their excellent support really made it an easy choice.

Does anybody try that http://readyshoppingcart.com guys?
